More Than a Screw Cap: Protecting Wine, Preserving Quality and Building Brand

When we think about what makes a great wine, the closure probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But for Guala Closures Australia, it plays an important role in protecting wine quality, preserving the winemaker's vision and contributing to the overall presentation of the bottle.

As an ICCWS partner, Guala supports Australian wine producers with premium aluminium screw caps and tailored closure solutions designed to meet both technical and branding requirements.

A Cloudy Bay case study

A great example of this approach is Guala's long-standing partnership with New Zealand winery Cloudy Bay.

The relationship began in 2003 and has continued to evolve, with Cloudy Bay choosing Guala for the quality and reliability of its closures, as well as the company's ability to deliver a distinctive design.

Today, Cloudy Bay's bottles feature a side-embossed screw cap with tactile relief, adding a

subtle but distinctive element to the packaging.

For Cloudy Bay Wine Communications Manager Kat Mason, the partnership is about both aesthetics and performance. Guala's closures help protect the wine from unwanted alterations, maintaining its original taste and aromas and respecting the winemaker's vision.

The result is a closure that contributes to both the protection and presentation of the wine, demonstrating that even a small packaging detail can play a meaningful role in the consumer experience.

Premium closures for wineries of all sizes

While a bespoke closure might traditionally be associated with larger wine producers, Guala Closures Australia is also focused on making customised solutions accessible to smaller and boutique wineries.

Its low-volume production program allows orders from 5,000 caps, with two-colour customised closure printing. This gives smaller producers the opportunity to create professional, branded closures without committing to large production runs.

Guala also provides support throughout the process, including new product setup, technical guidance, design support and colour matching, helping ensure the closure complements the bottle, label and overall brand presentation.

Global expertise, local support

Australian producers also benefit from Guala's global manufacturing capabilities and innovation, combined with local market knowledge and technical support.

Its solutions are designed to deliver reliable sealing and consistent performance, support wine preservation, provide premium aesthetics and offer added tamper-evident and brand protection features.

With continued investment in recyclability, efficient material use, responsible sourcing and research and development, Guala is also evolving its closure solutions alongside the changing needs of the wine industry, such as introducing PVC free liners.

For Australian wineries, from boutique producers to established exporters, Guala Closures Australia offers a combination of technical expertise, design capability and flexible production options, helping producers protect what's inside the bottle while making the outside just as considered.
