ICCWS Unveils Australia’s First Environmental Sustainability Award for Wineries

At the International Cool Climate Wine Show (ICCWS), we have always been at the forefront of championing exceptional cool climate wines. This year, we are taking our commitment further by shining a light on sustainability. In a pioneering move, we are proud to introduce the Excellence in Environmental Sustainability Award (EESA), at the 2025 ICCWS—making it the first award of its kind in an Australian wine show.

This exciting new accolade, supported by major energy provider AGL, recognises wineries that are not only producing top-tier wines but are also demonstrating outstanding commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

Why This Award Matters

While wine shows traditionally assess quality and craftsmanship, sustainability is now a crucial factor in modern winemaking. As climate change continues to impact grape-growing regions, winemakers are increasingly adopting practices that safeguard the environment while maintaining the integrity of their wines.

Paul White, Chairman of ICCWS, “highlights the significance of this award as it quantifies and qualifies the growing strategies and programs that wineries are undertaking to achieve a beneficial environment for all. It allows consumers to identify and support brands that are actively working towards a more sustainable future.”

The award has been welcomed by industry leaders and winemakers alike, reinforcing the importance of environmental responsibility in the wine sector.

What Makes This Award Unique?

Unlike traditional wine shows where accolades, focus solely on taste and structure of the wine, this award evaluates a winery’s environmental impact. Entries will be assessed across key sustainability criteria, including:

  • Sustainable Farming Practices – Responsible land management, biodiversity initiatives, and organic viticulture

  • Renewable Energy Use – Solar power, wind energy, and other renewable sources

  • Water Conservation – Efficient irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and drought-resistant techniques

  • Waste Reduction & Recycling – Reducing winery waste and embracing circular economy principles

  • Carbon Footprint Reduction – Minimising emissions and investing in carbon offset programs

  • Sustainability Innovation – Pioneering new eco-friendly methods that set industry benchmarks

Looking Ahead

With its launch, the Excellence in Environmental Sustainability Award (EESA) is set to become a catalyst for greater environmental consciousness within the wine industry. By celebrating and promoting sustainable winemaking, we at ICCWS, along with AGL, are paving the way for a greener, more responsible future—one that benefits both the planet and the wine in your glass.
