A Story of Resilience, Craft & Award-Winning Wines

At Vinteloper, wine is more than a drink—it’s an invitation to savour life’s most memorable moments. Nestled in the scenic Adelaide Hills, this boutique winery embodies a philosophy that wine connects people, sparks celebrations, and reflects the land from which it comes.

The results speak for themselves. At the 2024 International Cool Climate Wine Show (ICCWS), Vinteloper’s commitment to excellence was recognised with Best Red Wine in Show for their 2023 Pinot Noir, along with Top Gold Awards for their 2024 Pinot Gris, 2022 Chardonnay, and 2023 Pinot Noir. These accolades reaffirm Vinteloper’s position as a leader in Australian cool-climate winemaking.
The Fire That Forged Resilience
Vinteloper’s story is one of reinvention and grit. When the devastating 2019 Adelaide Hills bushfire reduced 95% of their vines and a century-old farmhouse to ash, it could have spelled the end. But David Bowley and his team saw it as a challenge: to rebuild, replant, and reimagine.

Fast forward to 2023, and their first post-fire crop was harvested ahead of schedule—a triumph symbolising the resilience that defines both the vines and the people of Vinteloper. Their new House of Vinteloper, a sleek reimagining of their original farmhouse, isn’t just a cellar door. It’s a gathering space, offering visitors a full sensory experience of the winery’s ethos: bold, fresh wines crafted for connection and celebration.
Cool Climate: The Secret to Their Success
Vinteloper’s wines thrive in the cool-climate conditions of the Adelaide Hills, located on Kaurna Country, where temperatures average four degrees cooler than metro Adelaide. This environment allows for slow grape ripening, preserving acidity and enhancing subtle flavours that make their wines sing.
At ICCWS 2024, these unique conditions shone through in the 2023 Pinot Noir, a wine lauded for its vibrancy and elegance. With red fruit, earthy undertones, and silky complexity, it encapsulates the best of the Adelaide Hills terroir. Similarly, the 2024 Pinot Gris, with its citrusy freshness, and the finely balanced 2022 Chardonnay, demonstrate Vinteloper’s mastery of cool-climate craftsmanship.
But what truly sets Vinteloper apart is their commitment to sustainability and collaboration. David Bowley works closely with local farmers to ensure their winemaking not only reflects the land but actively contributes to it. This sustainable approach ensures their wines aren’t just great for today—they’re great for generations to come.
The Team Behind the Wines
Vinteloper’s success is a testament to the dedication and expertise of its winemaking team. Sarah Marrocco, who joined Vinteloper in 2021, played a vital role in vineyard recovery after the bushfires and has led the winemaking since 2023. Her passion for crafting wines that express the Adelaide Hills terroir has been instrumental in Vinteloper’s continued excellence.

"The ICCWS provides an invaluable opportunity for Australian cool-climate producers to benchmark their wines against those from other cool-climate regions globally. I’m incredibly proud to see wines from the Adelaide Hills continue to be at the forefront of the Show! A testament to the collective efforts of both winemakers and viticulturists, solidifying the Adelaide Hills as a world-class cool-climate region." - Sarah Marrocco, Winemaker
