Discovering Cantina Zafferami : A Hidden Gem in the Enchanting Village of Doglio, Umbria, Italy

Having traveled the world and experienced the grandeur of renowned wineries, I've come to cherish the intimate allure of family-run vineyards that infuse each bottle with passion and authenticity. Italy is a cradle of such enterprises, where love for winemaking is palpable in every sip—a sentiment exemplified by “Cantina Zafferami”.

Nestled within the unspoiled landscape of Umbria lies Doglio, an ancient village that captivates with its winding cobblestone streets and timeless stone edifices. This serene enclave, framed by rolling vineyards and olive groves, whispers tales of centuries past.

In the heart of Doglio, Cantina Zafferami awaits—a cherished family estate tended by Colombo, his wife Betty, brother Roberto, and their son Filippo, the artisan winemaker and heir. Their five-acre vineyard nurtures a bounty of grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, Sangiovese, and Syrah.

During my visit, I indulged in a selection of their exquisite wines, each a testament to the Zafferami family's dedication:

  • Stille de Bacco Chardonnay (14% ABV): Crisp and clean, with delicate notes of apples and pears.

  • EOS Rosé (13.5% ABV): A captivating rosé infused with fruit-forward flavors from a day of skin contact.

  • Vinum (14% ABV): A harmonious blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, showcasing subtle tannins and a refined dryness.

  • Dolium 2020 (14% ABV): A luscious fusion of Cabernet and Merlot, boasting hues of plums and cherries with a velvety finish.

  • Upcoming Shiraz (2023): Maturing gracefully in stainless steel vats, already revealing a promising complexity destined for greatness.

The wines harmonized beautifully with Doglio's famed cuisine—wild boar stew and truffles—products of the lush forests that embrace the village.

Amidst the rustic charm of their cantina, I shared laughter and stories with the Zafferami family, savoring not just their wines but their genuine warmth and passion.

If you plan to explore Umbria, be sure to include Doglio in your itinerary. The wines of Cantina Zafferami will not disappoint, and I highly recommend visiting during one of their festive summer days—a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of this enchanting village and celebrate the essence of Italian winemaking.
